Overview Funding Community History

Giving History

In keeping with its Chicago roots, the Sara Lee Foundation’s giving priorities have been influenced by the city’s long tradition of proactively addressing urban concerns that date back to Jane Addams’ Chicago settlement house in the late 19th century.

Long before it was fashionable for corporations to embrace philanthropy, Sara Lee Corporation dedicated efforts to be socially responsible, and in 1981 established the Sara Lee Foundation to oversee its philanthropic activities. Throughout its history, the Foundation has guided an unusually balanced giving program and over the years, Sara Lee has redefined its corporate philanthropy and expanded its purpose, applications, and results. These efforts have created a corporate culture where business and responsibility no longer exist as a duality, but are now in fact integrated in the interests of the community.

Giving is the lifework of the Sara Lee Foundation, and we are committed to funding organizations and causes at many levels. Through our direct grants and matching grants, we will continue to support programs where we can effect the greatest positive change. Over the years, our grants have supported a wide variety of organizations that have enriched the arts, aided women's progress and improved the lives of those living in adverse circumstances.

The dedication, ethics and leadership of the Foundation remain at the heart of the philanthropic endeavor. Sara Lee is proud to have played a leading role in community revitalization and is excited about the opportunities the future will bring.
