National Medal of Arts

Sara Lee's sustaining support for the arts was recognized in 1998 when it was awarded the prestigious National Medal of Arts by President Bill Clinton.

The National Medal of Arts, created by Congress in 1984, is given by the President of the United States to individuals or groups who are in his judgement, "...deserving of special recognition by reason of their outstanding contributions to the excellence, growth, support, and availability of the arts in the United States..." Sara Lee was the only corporation to receive the award in 1998, joining six other corporations that have received the National Medal of Arts since its beginning. Over the past 25 years, Sara Lee has directed millions of dollars in financial support to local, regional, national, and international arts organizations.
